Review:

In Bierzo Coal Basin there existed numerous open-pit and underground coal mines. Nowadays, almost all mines have been closed, but lots of non-restored waste coal piles, open pits and acid mine drainage from abandoned mine adits persist. A mine inventory has been done taking into account environmental factors in order to assess the overall environmental impact of those mining structures. This inventory has allowed to set Significant Areas of Special Performance or degraded areas with severe, moderate or critical impact.
The formation of acidic waters and heavy metals liberation impacts river systems by altering the physicochemical quality of waters, destroying habitats and altering ecosystem processes and trophic chains, by means of various processes: acidity, dissolution, bio-accumulation, absorption, precipitation, etc. This research evaluates the effect of Acid Mine Drainage on aquatic communities and the bio-accumulation of heavy metals in trophic chains. So that heavy metals concentrations are measured in benthic macroinvertebrates, algae and ictiofauna.
