The acidification of soil and water is a major environmental problem. Industrial activities, among which include mining, represent important sources of soil and water acidification. In connection with the closing of mines, or abandoned mining activities, numerous problems have been emerging. Besides mining, power plants, reforestation with conifers, forest fires, etc.., All contribute to acidification of soils and waters. This makes agencies and companies direct their efforts to develop alternative, low-cost, effective, and environmentally acceptable, such as passive treatments. The importance of the problems of soil and water acidity, and interest in the problems of acidification are awakening in society, led the Department of Exploitation and Exploration of Mines, University of Oviedo, to organize in June 2002 a Meeting scientific-technical on this subject, in order to expose the problem and the main processes taking place, and to present a review and update of the latest techniques for treating this problem. This has had the participation of internationally renowned specialists from Spain, United Kingdom and the United States, to contribute their experiences in this field. This publication contains the majority of the lectures given in this Technical Scientific Meeting.
