The protection of deposits of water for urban consumption is mainly done through the establishment of protection zones, defined as the area around a collection in which graded manner, restrict or prohibit the activities or facilities that may contaminate groundwater or affecting the flow really tapped to supply the population. The results obtained after defining safeguard zones of urban water supply catchments for decades in many countries indicate that constitute an effective system to find a compromise between adequate and sufficient resource protection and respect of socio-economic activity in the surrounding region. In structuring this work we have chosen to analyze first the reference legal framework for the delineation of wellhead protection of deposits of urban water supply in Spain, its treatment in different countries, the criteria can be used to establish an order of priority between different municipalities in their regional location and the main characteristics of the mathematical approaches for defining groundwater flow and solute transport used to delimit. In the second part is analyzed the methodology for the delineation of safeguard quality and protection of water resources in many catchments in urban supply is discussed, analyzing the different applicable methods according to the characteristics of the captured material.
