The Earth is a dynamic planet where geological processes taking place, whether internal or external, are likely to cause damage to man and his environment. Society must make use of the current scientific and technical knowledge to try to prevent hazardous situations and to intervene in case of an emergency. In Spain, geological hazards that have more impact on the development of our daily activities are torrential floods and ground movements, but also must be other phenomena such as earthquakes, volcanism, tsunamis and the risks associated with coastal dynamics . This book contains fourteen chapters related to the presentations made during the conference on Geologic Hazards (GEORRIESGOS 2008), organized by the Geological Survey of Spain (IGME) and the Insurance Compensation Consortium (CCS) and held in Las Palmas Gran Canaria on 8 and 9 April 2008. The items have been requested to scientific and technical experts in the field whose contributions cover a wide spectrum ranging from the basic study of geological hazards to some aspects of its management. Noteworthy is the use in many of these works of GIS as a basic tool for mapping and analysis of geological hazards. This book is intended as a reference for scientists and technicians working in the geological risk reduction and an introductory guide to authorities, students and the general public interested in the subject of geological hazards. In short, it is a contribution to discover the importance of studies of geological hazards in the preventive management of them and their influence on the technical, scientific-technical and socio-economic society.
